Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into machine knitting for a while. I finally took the plunge and got myself a basic jumper knitting machine. Let me tell you, it’s been a journey!

Getting Started
First, I unboxed the thing. It came with a bunch of parts, and honestly, I was a little intimidated. There’s the main machine bed, the carriage, a bunch of needles, weights, and some weird-looking tools. The instruction manual… well, let’s just say it wasn’t the most user-friendly thing I’ve ever read.
I spent a good few hours just trying to figure out how to set it up. I watched some videos online, which helped a bit, but there’s still a lot of trial and error involved. I finally managed to get the yarn threaded through the carriage and onto the needles. It took some fumbling, and I definitely poked myself a few times.
The First Attempt
My first attempt at knitting a simple swatch was… a disaster. The yarn kept getting tangled, the needles were dropping stitches, and the whole thing just looked like a mess. I felt pretty frustrated, to be honest. I almost gave up right there.
But I took a deep breath, untangled the yarn (again!), and re-read the instructions. I realized I was doing a few things wrong. I wasn’t holding the yarn at the right tension, and I was moving the carriage way too fast.
Slow and Steady
I started over, this time going much slower. I paid close attention to the yarn tension and made sure the carriage was moving smoothly across the needles. And guess what? It actually started to look like knitted fabric!
It wasn’t perfect, by any means. There were still a few dropped stitches and some uneven tension, but it was a huge improvement. I kept practicing, making small swatches and experimenting with different stitch patterns.
Making Progress
After a few days of practice, I felt confident enough to try knitting a simple project – a scarf. I followed a basic pattern I found online and slowly but surely, the scarf started to take shape.
It took me a whole weekend to finish the scarf, but it was so satisfying to see the finished product. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine, and I made it with my own two hands (and a machine, of course!).

Still Learning
I’m still very much a beginner when it comes to machine knitting. There’s so much more to learn – different stitch types, shaping techniques, using multiple colors… the possibilities are endless!
But I’m enjoying the process, and I’m excited to see what I can create with my jumper knitting machine. It’s definitely a challenging hobby, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. For a new learner like me, I hope this journey is useful for you! Don’t give up!
