Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “flatbed knitting machine” thing, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey! I saw some cool stuff online made with these machines, and I thought, “I gotta try that!”

Getting Started
First, I got myself a machine. It wasn’t one of those fancy computerized ones, just a basic, manual flatbed. It looked pretty intimidating at first, with all those needles and levers.
Then, I found some yarn. I went with a simple acrylic yarn to start, nothing too fancy. I figured I’d mess up a lot, so no point in wasting the good stuff, you know?
The Learning Curve
- I watched a bunch of videos online. There are tons of tutorials, but honestly, some of them were confusing as heck.
- I tried to follow along, but my yarn kept getting tangled, and the needles seemed to have a mind of their own.
- I must have started over, like, ten times. Seriously, ten times. Swear words might be involved.
- My first few attempts looked… well, let’s just say they weren’t pretty. More like a tangled mess than anything resembling fabric.
Making Progress (Finally!)
But I kept at it. I practiced casting on (that’s getting the yarn onto the needles), and after a while, it started to click. I even managed to knit a few rows without dropping any stitches!
I experimented with different stitch patterns. Plain knit stitch is the easiest, but I also tried some ribbing and even a little bit of cabling. It’s amazing how just moving the needles in different ways can create so many different textures.
My First Project
I decided to make a scarf. It seemed simple enough, just a long rectangle. It took me a while, but I finally finished it! It’s not perfect, there are a few dropped stitches here and there, and the edges are a little wonky, but I made it myself, and that’s pretty cool.
What’s Next?
I’m definitely going to keep practicing. I want to try making a hat next, and maybe even a sweater someday. There’s so much you can do with these machines, it’s kind of addictive! It’s a real pain to start, but once you’ve got the hang of some of it, it’s a blast!
