Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at machine knitting for a while now. I saw this pattern online for a chunky knit sweater, and it looked so cozy, I just had to give it a go! I’ve got this old Bond knitting machine that I dusted off and tried to remember how to use. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a learning curve, but I was determined to get this sweater done!
First things first, I had to find the pattern. I wanted something free, you know, just in case I messed it up. I searched for “free knitting machine patterns” online and looked for something that mentioned “Bond knitting machine”. I found a few options, but this one chunky sweater pattern really caught my eye. So I downloaded it and printed it out. It looked pretty straightforward, but who was I kidding? I knew I was in for an adventure!
Next, I needed to gather my materials. The pattern called for some chunky yarn, which I didn’t have. Off to the craft store I went! I picked out this beautiful, soft, chunky yarn that I thought would be perfect for a cozy sweater. I also made sure I had all the other bits and bobs that my knitting machine needed, like the weights and the little claw things.
Then came the fun part – actually using the knitting machine! I set it up on the table, following the instructions that came with it. Threading the yarn was a bit tricky at first, I fumbled around, dropped the yarn a couple times, but I eventually got the hang of it. Casting on was another story. I kept messing up and having to start over. I almost gave up a few times, but I powered through, I was on a mission! Finally, after a few tries, I managed to cast on successfully! Woohoo!
Once I got going, it actually wasn’t too bad. I followed the pattern, row by row, slowly but surely. It was kind of mesmerizing watching the machine knit, the needles clicking and clacking away. It was way faster than hand knitting, that’s for sure! I did have a few dropped stitches here and there, and I had to learn how to fix them, which was a whole other challenge. Thank goodness for the instruction manual and some online tutorials!
After a few evenings of knitting, I finally finished all the pieces of the sweater – the front, the back, and the two sleeves. I was so proud of myself! I couldn’t believe I actually made something on this machine. Next, I had to sew the pieces together. I’m not the best at sewing, but I managed to get it done. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, it was handmade! There is love in every stitch, and error!

And there you have it! My very own, machine-knitted, chunky sweater. It’s a little wonky in places, but I absolutely love it. It’s so warm and cozy, and I’m so proud that I made it myself. It was definitely a learning experience, but I’m so glad I tried it. Now I’m hooked on machine knitting! I’m already looking for my next project. Maybe a scarf this time? Or maybe I’ll try to tackle another sweater. We’ll see!
