Okay, so I’ve been seeing these knitting machines all over TikTok and I finally caved. I got one! I was so pumped to try it out, but also kinda clueless about what to actually make with it. I mean, scarves are obvious, but I wanted to see what else this thing could do.

Getting Started
First things first, I had to figure out how to even use this contraption. The instructions were…okay, but watching a couple of YouTube videos really helped. It’s all about getting the yarn tension right and cranking smoothly. My first few attempts were, shall we say, a disaster. Lots of dropped stitches and tangled yarn. It took some practice, but I finally got the hang of it.
Experiment Time!
Once I felt comfortable with the basic cranking motion, I started experimenting. Here’s a rundown of what I tried, and how it went:
- The Classic Scarf: Yeah, yeah, I know I said I wanted to go beyond scarves, but I had to try it. It was surprisingly fast! I cranked out a decent-length scarf in, like, an hour. Super satisfying.
- A Beanie: This was a little trickier. I made a tube that was long enough, then had to figure out how to close up the top. I ended up hand-sewing it, which worked, but wasn’t super pretty. I definitely need to practice my finishing techniques.
- Leg Warmers: These were surprisingly easy! Just two long tubes. Perfect for cozying up on the couch.
- coffee cup cozy:Because it’s small and * I cranked it successfully.
- A Messy Attempt at a Sweater Panel: Okay, this was ambitious. I was thinking I could make a bunch of panels and sew them together. The panel itself actually came out okay, but it was pretty small. I realized making a whole sweater would take forever and a lot more skill than I currently possess. Maybe someday!
What I Learned
This knitting machine is definitely fun! It’s great for quickly making simple things like scarves, hats, and leg warmers. But for more complex projects, I’ve got a lot to learn. I need to get better at:
- Changing colors: I tried to add a stripe to one of my scarves, and it was a bit of a mess.
- Finishing: Closing up the tops of hats and making things look neat is a whole other skill set.
- Understanding patterns: I’m starting to look at patterns for machine knitting, and it’s a whole new language!
Overall, I’m really enjoying this new crafting adventure. It’s a fun way to make quick projects, and it’s definitely sparked my interest in learning more about knitting in general. I’ll keep practicing and see what other crazy things I can crank out!
