Okay, so, I got this Sentro knitting machine a while back, and I gotta say, figuring out the right yarn to use with it was a bit of a head-scratcher at first. I mean, I jumped right in, all excited, and started with some leftover yarn I had lying around.

First, I grabbed some super bulky stuff, like a size 6 or 7, thinking bigger is better, right? Wrong! It was a total disaster. The machine just couldn’t handle it. The yarn kept getting jammed, and the stitches were all messed up. It was a frustrating mess, I tried to push the yarn into the needles. I gave up finally.
Then, I thought, “Okay, let’s go to the other extreme.” So I tried some really thin, fingering weight yarn, a size 1. That didn’t work out so well either. The stitches were way too loose, and the fabric looked like it was full of holes. It was like trying to knit with thread, I tried to turn the crank slowly and carefully, and it produced something, but not great.
After a couple of failed attempts, I decided to do some digging online. And you know what I found? Most folks were saying that medium weight, or worsted weight yarn, is the sweet spot for the Sentro. They call it size 4 yarn. I found someone metioned that the right yarn really depends on your machine’s gauge, that’s a good point, but anyway.
My Practice
So, the next time I went to the craft store, I made sure to pick up some worsted weight yarn, specifically size 4. And let me tell you, it made a world of difference!
- I loaded the yarn onto the machine, following the instructions this time, made sure that the yarn is in the right tension.
- I started cranking, and it was like a dream. The yarn fed through smoothly.
- The stitches were even and consistent, no more jams or loose loops.
- I ended up making a pretty decent-looking scarf. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a heck of a lot better than my first few tries.
Now, I’m not saying you can’t experiment with other yarn weights. I’m sure there are people out there who’ve had success with different sizes. But for me, sticking with size 4 worsted weight yarn has been the key to getting good results with my Sentro knitting machine. It’s like, once I found the right yarn, the machine and I finally started to get along.
